Why it pays off to quit your job the nice way
by Robert Dobes | June 22nd, 2007
I have a new big, big web project on a horizon so I am pretty exited now. The way I got this job is actually quite an interesting story which proves that quitting your job the nice and friendly way can actually pay off in the future.
Before I started my own web design business I was working for a guy (I’ll call him Joe here) who ran several different businesses including a small web design company. It was really great and I had the opportunity to learn a lot over the 4 years I worked for him. In the 4th year however things started to go south. Joe’s financial problems made it really difficult to work for him since at times I got no paycheck in 2 months.
Anyway, long story short … I had to quit the job. Now I had 2 options. I could just take all my anger and tell Joe to take his job and shove it up his … or I could put on a friendly face and talk to him about my decision to leave the company, nicely explaining my reasons. I decided to go with the second option just to keep the door open for the future because you never know when you might need it.
Now, one of Joe’s businesses started making some serious money. He contacted me a few days ago asking me to work on one of his big web projects. So we are back in business with only one difference. I’ll be working on this project as a hired freelancer rather than his employee.
It really pays off to quit your job the nice way.
Oh, one more thing. I already got a big check as a deposit,
isn’t it great?

That’s great Robert! I have thought about just quitting my job but then I would be struggling so until I find an opportunity I will be reluctantly doing this or until I build my own business.
Let me ask you a question. I have a BFA degree in Visual Communications which is graphic/web design but I really want to good at graphic design. I have my own website and have done freelancing for small businesses but I need to know the advanced works to make my websites more optimal for viewing. Any suggestions on what I need to learn?
Thanks.
Mad Talent,
I checked your site. It looks great. I would only suggest to be careful with the animations. It kind of slows down the experience and it may discourage people to come back to your site.
If you want to learn more about starting and running a web design business I’d recommend to buy “The Web Design Business Kit” written by Brendon Sinclair. You can get the book at http://www.sitepoint.com and it costs about $250. Please note, it’s about running the business not about actual design techniques.
I got this kit and it really helped me to get my web business going.
I hope that helps.
Good luck with your own business.
Yup, I purchased the Web Design Business Kit as well and love it. Worth every penny.
Thanks to the Kit I do what I love and probably I would never find the courage to take this path if it wouldn’t be for the web design business kit. I know I make it sound like I am getting paid for promoting it but I am just telling it the way I feel it.
